I am just, so, so incredibly proud of my team. This award is basically what my team strives for all in one happy broom, and that we won it speaks loads to how successful we are. Thank you quidkids everywhere. When I found out I literally hugged myself in joy : )
And to the Broooers everywhere - it is all thanks to you. You are the best. You are the ones that bring this magic to our lives. I just… want to go to my fellow co captains, from sophomore year, and just blabber at them thoughtlessly of how proud I am of my team. Thank you freshmen/now sophomores, our newest Captains. You have big shoes and a reputation to fill, but I am more than confident that you will maintain that Broooer Quove and Quidditch Spirit.
I am glad Matt was there to receive the award. As soon as the team gets back together, I’ll get a pic of all of us with it, Zeltzer right in the center : 3 And you will truly see how quadorable we are.

QQ: Whimsicality and Competition

I thought I would do a little signal boosting to one particular article! Excellently written by Dan Hanson I think it does a good job in portraying varying points of views about this debate and also helped me think a bit more about an issue I have been very concerned with since the schism started appearing. You can find the issue in page 36!

Contributing to my promoting this particular article among other great ones (from safe tackling to snitches to just how generally splendiferous the whole QQ issue is) is the fact that on page 40, you can find something that says “A Perspective from Vassar” - which I wrote.

Other people, awesome people quoted in the article are Matt Panico, Mitch Cavender, Anna Brisbin, Tom Marks, and of course, Andy Hyatt, among others.

Check it out, and maybe buy a subscription ; )

The SJSU Owls and the Silicon Valley Skrewts up to their usual shennanigans.

Submitted by kuakista

The more I hear about these teams, the more I love them.

Which brings me to a little story!

Last year, at the last practice of the year, we Captains looked at each other, and made a decision. See, it was the first year we had Seniors in our team, the first time someone would graduate… and leave the team. And the three most dedicated Seniors, were previously our Captains: three wondrous, wonderful, winning and wily ladies known as Domino, Michelle, and Laura.

So we told them they could do whatever they wanted this practice. They could tell us to jump, and we would jump. They were effectively Captains again for a final practice.

They told all non-seniors to roll.

So roll we did, with brooms and without brooms and with bludgers and quaffle in hand. Did The Seniors roll? No, they formed one entity that skipped around bludging and scoring all the time.

In the game they told us we could run, we were told we had to leap and skip.

Some of us turned out to be really good at rolling.

It was a great day.

Because I am in the middle of midterms, I will just drop by this quick update so I can concentrate on studying the development of the coelom in animal architecture.

1) Ridiculous bruise I got at last practice, on Sunday. I have no idea how I got it - I don’t remember when I got hurt, and I have a bunch of smaller bruises all around my legs and my wrist, so I must have tumbled particularly weird at some point.

Edit: oh my Rowling that photo looks awkward. I am wearing pajama shorts!

2) This is my Quidditch/Harry Potter wall. It makes me happy. And the snitch trophy is from one of the previous Butterbeer classics - having been a Captain has its advantages. Visible: one of the posters I made, HPAlliance postcards, the IQA World Cup IV poster, a poster by Chris Chan from UMass Amherst. Not seen: one HPWorld wand, one selfmade wand for the Elder Wand my team plats, a seeker! Harry figurine a friend found being given away and gifted to me, and a Harry Potter vocab poster another friend gifted me.

Formspring Uno!

“How do you feel about the IQA charging for the WC?”

Well… honestly, I am of two minds for the situation.

Con mind:

On the one hand, I am a college student and just getting to and staying at NYC can be expensive in and of itself, so I feel that an extra cost is off-putting, especially for a growing sport dominated by other college students. And lets consider that we are still trying to hook more spectators and fans with the World Cup and similar tournaments: if a newcomer is interested and is unsure about coming, the cost could change their maybe to a “no”. Besides, my team pays membership fees, and our whole team is bigger than the 21 players allowed (or is it 22 this year?). To my sense of justice, it does not seem fair to charge valued team members just because they didn’t make our World Cup roster – the process is complicated, involves consideration of dedication/attendance, seniority, and of course, playing skill. It is made doubly hard by the fact that a Captain ends up feeling a fierce parental pride in all their players, but choosing the roster is basically a balancing act of ALL those people who deserve to go, and in building a team that will be competitive in the World Cup. Every single other tournament the Broooers play in basically consists of whoever wants to/can go, because we never have specific try outs for the team – you show up, you practice, you are a part of the team. I also remember having an absolutely stellar time in the last World Cup, and some of the things mentioned for the Cup seem unnecessary and expensive, and I feel tempted to ask:

On the other hand…

I understand that the IQA is growing at a ridiculous pace. I understand that at the same time that I, my team, my region are influencing how Quidditch grows, other factors will affect Quidditch and make it not “my Quidditch. As far as changes go, the World Cup just being BIGGER isn’t one I mind so long as we keep the current spirit we have. Besides, we have what, 100 teams this year?

100 requires a LOT of resources : /

Getting a place for 100 teams to play in (Randall’s Island) is expensive. I can definitely see where that cost is coming from. This is a huge step up. And having tickets also gives a sense of legitimacy to the event. (Which I personally do not care about too much, because the moment I show videos of Quidditch tackles people take me seriously. I just don’t want this to get away from what Quidditch REALLY is about, and from the fun, silly spirit it has. We can’t take ourselves too seriously. The whole point is to not be too serious, but badass and intense at the same time with plenty of team cuddles at some point. I mean, dude, you’re ON A BROOM!).  And from what I hear, the IQA has organized some pretty neat things. So I guess it makes sense? I don’t feel like I can judge that much just yet because I don’t know the full measure of what is going on.

So… come back to me after the World Cup?

Sorry for the ridiculously long response!

Anybody else with questions can find me on my formspring.
